Certina

Certina was founded in 1888 by brothers Adolf and Alfred Kurth in Grenchen, Switzerland. The Certina brand name comes from the Latin word “certus” which means “certain” or “safe”. Certainty and quality are a given with Certina.

This philosophy can also be recognised in every Certina timepiece, since each watch is crafted according to the “DS concept” (double safety). The DS concept means a particularly robust design for Certina watches, which always feature the following elements: scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, elaborate sealing system (including crown and adjusting shaft), and reinforced case and caseback of the watch.

This is also the reason why every ladies’ and men’s watch from Certina have the abbreviation “DS” in their name, while the tortoise and its shell are used to symbolise the DS principle and are also found on all Certina watches.

Certina watches are available in four lines: Sport, Aqua, Urban, and Heritage. Watches from the Spors collection carry names like DS Podium, DS Eagle, DS Eagle Chronograph Automatic, and DS Sport. Bold design meets functionality, with stopwatch function, date display, and sporty materials like rubber, stainless steel, and titanium which underscore the special character of these Certina watches.

The Aqua collection features timepieces that are highly watertight as well as hands and dial in Super-LumiNova. The pieces in the Urban and Heritage collection offer a mixture of sportiness and timeless elegance.

The proximity to sport is also visible in Certina’s partnerships with athletes like Ole Einar Bjorndalen serving as brand ambassadors for the watchmaker. Even the late Muhammad Ali wore a Certina men’s watch in 1976.

Certina watches are powered by the Powermatic 80 automatic movement which is self winding for up to 80 hours or the C01.211, which enjoys a reputation as a particularly reliable chronograph watch. The Precidrive movement with precision that can be measured with a chronometer is especially appreciated for its accuracy.
